Join us for a free guided hike through one of Rhea County’s most breathtaking treasures—Piney Falls State Natural Area. Spanning 818 acres on the Cumberland Plateau, this National Natural Landmark is recognized as one of Tennessee’s best remaining examples of pristine forest, featuring deep gorges, cascading waterfalls, and remarkable old-growth trees.

This hike will take you to the stunning Upper Piney Falls, where Little Piney Creek plunges nearly 80 feet into the gorge below. Adventurous hikers can walk behind the falls along a concave rock ledge for an unforgettable perspective. Along the trail, you’ll experience towering white pines and eastern hemlocks—some over 100 feet tall—along with diverse plant life and peaceful forest scenery.

Guided by a knowledgeable local naturalist, Anna McDonald, you’ll learn about the area’s unique geology, ecology, and why Piney Falls is one of only fourteen National Natural Landmarks in Tennessee.
